Brian O’Connell, the famous Irish jockey with an impressive number of wins on the horse track, has rocked his career with the sad news of his early retirement from the sport. After suffering an injury to his right shoulder on 5 October 2017 and two subsequent unsuccessful surgeries, he broke the news of his retirement half a year later while still struggling with full recovery.
Whilst admitting that he would have wanted to stay in the sport for a good more number of years, unfortunately his life gave him a twist of fate. In spite of this setback, however, he is determined to find a way how to stay connected to and involved in the Irish horse racing industry and at the same time also show interest to embark on other projects.
Looking back at his career, O’Connell has no regrets. He rode 250 winners, both as an amateur and as a professional jockey. Amongst them were Last Instalment, Don Cossack and of course Dunguib, to mention just a few examples.
So Irish eyes are now all set to tip off another talented jockey that can achieve the same level of success as Brian O’Connell has. But meanwhile, if rumours are eventually confirmed, O’Connell may perhaps be seen in the coaching business.
