If you’re into horse racing on the flat chances are you’ve backed an Aiden O’Brien runner, and if you have you’ve probably backed a winner at the same time. As private trainer at Ballydoyle stables in Ireland he is in the privileged position to handle Coolmore Stud’s thoroughbreds but equally they have the privilege of having O’Brien train for them.
Aidan Obrien’s career and success
Following a champion amateur career as a jockey, where he trained his first winner in the same season, O’Brien’s successes have come thick and fast since his first English Classic winners in 2005, with Footstepsinthesand and Virginia Waters in the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas respectively. Since then it’s hard to think of a flat race of any note where he hasn’t been in the winners’ enclosure.
The list of legendary gee gees that have received his magic touch is also extremely long but some that would stick in the mind include Galileo, Yeats, and Rock of Gibraltar along with 2017’s crop, including Winter, Wings of Eagles, Capri and Churchill who helped O’Brien capture 8 of the 10 Classics in England and Ireland last year.
